Celebrating the Impact of Fairmount Center for the Arts: Shirley Schellentrager's Journey

For nearly eight years, Shirley Schellentrager has been a passionate and active member of the Fairmount Center for the Arts community. Whether as a student, volunteer, or donor, her contributions have shaped her own life—and, in turn, the lives of others who share her love for the arts.

Shirley’s artistic journey at Fairmount has been diverse, with her exploring a wide range of creative outlets. “Over the years, I’ve enjoyed classes in drawing, watercolor painting, papermaking, bookmaking, printmaking, calligraphy, and macrame,” she shared. But her heart lies in ceramics, which she describes as her favorite class. Beyond her personal artistic endeavors, Shirley also gives back by volunteering her time through assisting with the art show and various tasks in the ceramics studio.

However, it’s the connections she’s made with others at Fairmount that have truly enriched her experience. “Fairmount has given me an avenue to express myself creatively in a supportive and inspiring community,” Shirley said. Over the years, she’s met many “interesting, lovely people” who have become close friends—relationships that have only deepened her love for the center and the arts.

Shirley’s relationship with Fairmount goes beyond just participation; she’s also a dedicated donor, providing financial support to ensure the center’s continued growth. “Fairmount has enhanced and enriched my life in many ways, and I’m happy to show my appreciation through financial support. I hope that by doing so, others will be able to enjoy the opportunities Fairmount offers as much as I have,” she explained. Shirley understands the vital role of support for arts organizations, emphasizing how donations help facilitate programming, maintain physical spaces, and plan for future goals.

When reflecting on why Fairmount is so important to the community, Shirley pointed out that the center offers a unique space where everyone—from children to seniors—can explore and express themselves through the arts. “Fairmount gives us an opportunity to express ourselves through the arts, whether it be visual arts, movement, theater, or music. It’s a space to develop as an artist, and it allows us to thrive,” she said.

For Shirley, Fairmount has made a lasting impact, not only as a place to nurture creativity but also as a source of empowerment. “Fairmount has empowered me to expand my way of looking at the world. It’s enriched my life in multiple ways,” she said.
